Ekstraklasa sold the media rights for transmissions for Poland and abroad for years 2019-2021

Ekstraklasa has finalized, in the most important areas, the negotiations of the media rights for seasons: 2019/20 and 2020/21. The premier league company sold the rights to show shortcuts of football games in Polish TV, the rights to broadcast the games on selected international markets, and the bookmaker rights. As a result of the strategic decision, Ekstraklasa will develop their own media channels, and, starting from the forthcoming season, they will show football games shortcuts and live transmissions to users in the countries not covered by the exclusive license agreements.

In addition to the rights to transmissions in Poland, which were purchased by nc+ i TVP, they will also be able to show the users of Ekstraklasa’s official application the most interesting fragments of each game while still played. During each game, the app users will receive alerts containing 20 second clips featuring goal posts, penalty throws or other actions.

As part of the News Access rights, TVP and TVN will show two-minute long game shortcuts to be broadcast in their news programmes after each game. In 10 minutes from the last whistle, five-minute game will be available in the Ekstraklasa.TV - league’s app, and on - a new web site. The rights to the distribution of the shortcuts will also be granted to nc+, Ekstraklasa football clubs, the Polish Football Association (PZPN), and to one of the horizontal portals. Ekstraklasa is still holding talks with the respective potential partners.

- In 2012, we decided to build competences for independent broadcasting of matches within our team. We hit bull’s eye. Now, nobody can deny that our league is superbly broadcast. Moreover, during this year’s U-20 World Cup games, our group member Ekstraklasa Live Park was the main producer to whom FIFA the production of the transmission of their games. The images we produced were transmitted all over the world. Now, we have decided that it’s time to go further ahead; we want to set up our own channels to meet the demand resulting from the ever-changing mode of media consumption. Like the world’s biggest sports organisations: NBA, UEFA or La Liga, we will use the channels to commercialise our contents - said Marcin Animucki, President of the Management Board of Ekstraklasa S.A.

Consequently, as soon as the forthcoming season, all the games of PKO Ekstraklasa will, for the first time, be available worldwide, but for Poland, in our own paid video-streaming service, which is addressed to all football fans abroad, in particular, to the audience of nearly 20 million Polish people abroad.

- Considering the size of the Polish audience worldwide, it goes without doubt that the base of potential recipients of the Polish league OTT platform is quite broad. It would allow Ekstraklasa to build and maintain a community of football fans who will concurrently be its customers. This move fits in with the global tendency prevailing in the digital world of today, in particular in the sector of the sports events broadcasting rights - said Stefan Felsing, Head of STIMAX Consulting and former Executive Vice President, Media - Global Sales & Acquisitions at Lagardère Sports.

On the basis of licences and sublicenses, Telekom Austria’s Planet Sport acquired the rights to broadcast the PKO Ekstraklasa games in seven Balkan countries: Serbia, Croatia, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

- Planet Sport will show all the 296 games of PKO Ekstraklasa via their station. Such a high interest in the Polish football league follows, among other things, from the fact that as much as 49 Polish premier league players are native to this region. Our games will be one of the main points of Planet Sport’s offer, immediately next to the Master’s League; the games will be also promoted as important football games of the region. We are still holding talks with the Sportdigital TV for sale of the rights to transmit Ekstraklasa’s games. The station wants to transmit 30 of our football games in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Among other things, Sportdigital’s presence on the SKY platform will guarantee Ekstraklasa a broad reach within the region. Through agent: Cubillos, we are also talking with American broadcasters and with Indonesian broadcasters, who are interested in transmitting the games played by Lechia Gdańsk. This means that we have additional opportunities to increase proceeds and promote the premier league worldwide, since the contracts we have already signed guarantee us the budget level we had declared to the clubs – explained Małgorzata Borkowska, the media rights consultant of Ekstraklasa S.A.

By signing contract with IMG, Ekstraklasa has commercialised the international bookmaker rights already at the beginning of the season. On the basis of the contract, live games are shown at bookmaker’s stationary points and on international bookmakers’ web platforms outside Poland. In Poland, sale of the rights to transmissions of the PKO Ekstraklasa games at bookmaker’s outlets is being negotiated with our long-term partner: nc+.
